It warms the heart....
Look closely at the following picture and you'll notice that one of the babies seems terribly undersized.
He is.
That tiny little guy is the sole survivor of another litter in which mama had difficulty during delivery and a c-section was required. His mama subsequently rejected him, and the prognosis for this kitten was pretty bleak.
Somewhat miraculously, within minutes of their introduction, Sea Mist Dancer and her 12-day-old litter of five kittens happily adopted the orphan into their family.
We were initially very concerned the larger kittens wouldn't share with the orphan, or would possibly injure him. After all, a litter of five hungry and robust kittens play pretty rough and want all the milk they can get!
Fortunately, our concerns were completely unnecessary. They all seemed to know he needed special care and treated him accordingly. They not only share, but ensure he gets his place at the table.
Dancer and her "5+1" litter are all doing very, very well.
